"It was a close place. I took . . . up [the letter I’d written to Miss Watson], and held it in my hand. I was a-trembling, because I’d got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: “All right then, I’ll go to hell”—and tore it up. It was awful thoughts and awful words, but they was said. And I let them stay said; and never thought no more about reforming."
Huck is forced to deal with a society that continually tells him that racism is not only okay, but also the right thing to do, and that slavery is a good practice. However, Huck finds himself torn after his adventures with Jim and struggles to go against society's whims.
I thought about posting on controversial topics such as sexual orientation, trans* rights, and capitalism as whole to name a few; However, I decided to write about somethings that I think has just as much controversy surrounding it, without the realization of how it's problematic: selfies.
Now, I want to make something clear, I am supporting selfies, so if you think this is going to be another one of those blog posts about how the Millennials are "Generation Me" or claiming that our generation has endless narcissism, you will not find what you seek here.
I cannot tell you how many times I have heard people diss selfies, selfie takers, including "basic white girls", and the entire culture surrounding the taking of selfies, and while I originally agreed, as I grew up, I began to notice how everything was not as simple as anti-selfie advocates made it seem.
People constantly complain about people taking selfies, as if it is the worst, most self-centered thing someone could be doing. And yes, while taking a selfie at someone's funeral may not be the most appropriate thing to do, I don't know their story, or what was happening, and at my funeral, if someone looks good enough they want to commemorate it, let them; I'm dead, and if they dressed up nice for an occasion commemorating me, let them spread it. So many people lack confidence to even get out of bed in the morning, let alone post pictures of themselves online, and while they may glorify their own lives, "fake it till you make it" actually does work for some people. So, while it may be easy to just call selfie-taking a sign of deep narcissism in the culture of youth, until you've talked to people who have dealt who used to have confidence issues that went as deep as self-harm and eating disorders, you cannot really speak on this issue. Thanks to selfie-culture, some of those people have faked it until they've made it, and are finally living their lives out to the fullest, so you can excuse me if I am a bit angry at those who think of selfies as a vapid expression of narcissism.
So, whenever I see someone taking a selfie, whether it's with friends, or at a building, or party, or just by themselves because they think they look good, I am proud they have the confidence that so many people have struggled to find.
I myself take few selfies, and post them even rarer, but that's not the point, the point is that those who do are not Narcissus reincarnated, and if they are, for taking a selfie, then something is seriously wrong with society.

I may make a part two to this post for another topic I almost hit on this one.
